About Us - Product sourcing

Product Sourcing: Quality You Can Trace, Integrity You Can Trust

At Social Herbalists, we believe that what you put in your body should be as honest and unaltered as possible. That’s why we go beyond buzzwords like “natural” and “organic” — and instead, focus on building a sourcing process rooted in transparency, testing, and trust.

Our product sourcing approach is more than just supply chain logistics — it’s a reflection of who we are. From handpicked herbs to full-spectrum blends, we select only those ingredients that meet our standards for purity, potency, and purpose.

Our Product Sourcing Philosophy

We don’t believe in shortcuts — especially when it comes to health. That’s why every product we offer is sourced with intention and care. Whether it’s a loose leaf tea or a performance supplement, our guiding principles remain the same:

  • Natural First: We prioritise ingredients that are plant-based, unadulterated, and free from artificial fillers or preservatives.
  • Organic Where Possible: Many of our herbs are organically grown. When full certification isn’t possible (e.g. small-scale farms), we look for equivalent non-certified practices and traceable evidence of sustainable cultivation.
  • Sourced with Purpose: We don’t jump on trends. Every ingredient is selected for a specific wellness benefit — not just because it’s fashionable.

This approach ensures that our product catalogue isn’t just clean — it’s intentional.

Selecting the Right Suppliers

We don’t work with just anyone. Our supplier partnerships are built on shared values — including a commitment to quality, sustainability, and open communication.

Before any supplier is approved, we conduct a thorough vetting process that includes:

  • Reviewing their quality assurance and safety documentation
  • Understanding their harvesting, processing, and storage methods
  • Evaluating their environmental and ethical practices
  • Sampling and lab testing their raw materials
  • Establishing a clear, ongoing line of communication

We aim to develop long-term relationships, not transactional partnerships. Over time, this allows us to build trust, influence practices, and maintain the consistency our customers expect.

Quality Assurance & Third-Party Testing

Everything we stock must pass our internal quality checks — but that’s just the beginning.

We also require independent third-party testing for key markers like:

  • Purity: Free from heavy metals, pesticides, microbials, and adulterants
  • Identity: Confirming the correct species and part of the plant
  • Potency: Verifying active compound levels
  • Freshness: Ensuring products haven’t degraded during storage or transport

Test results are reviewed before product approval and periodically revisited through random batch testing — especially for herbs prone to contamination or fraud (e.g. turmeric, ashwagandha, ginseng).

We work with accredited labs using validated testing methods like HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography), GC-MS, and microbiological screening — because guessing isn’t good enough.

Traceability: From Seed to Shelf

We aim for traceability wherever possible — the ability to track each product’s journey from harvest to your cup or capsule.

This includes:

  • Knowing the origin (country, region, and sometimes even the farm)
  • Tracking harvesting methods (e.g. wildcrafted, hand-picked, machine-processed)
  • Monitoring processing steps (drying, cutting, powdering)
  • Ensuring proper storage and transit conditions

This not only reduces the risk of quality loss or contamination — it also gives our customers peace of mind. If you ever want to know where your product came from or how it was handled, we’ll be happy to show you.

Supporting Ethical and Sustainable Practices

We don’t just look at product specs — we look at people and the planet too.

Where possible, we support suppliers who:

  • Pay fair wages and support small-scale or local farming
  • Avoid overharvesting and protect endangered species
  • Minimise water usage, soil damage, and chemical inputs
  • Reinvest in their communities

This is especially important in herb-rich regions like India, Sri Lanka, Ghana, and Peru, where ethical sourcing practices can vary significantly between suppliers.

Sourcing responsibly means we’re not only offering quality — we’re helping support regenerative systems that last.

What We Don’t Do

To keep our standards high, here’s what we intentionally avoid:

  • No synthetic additives or fillers
  • No “white label” rebrands without testing
  • No unverified “miracle” herbs
  • No overhyped blends made just to chase trends
  • No compromised batches — ever

If something doesn’t meet our criteria, we don’t offer it. Simple as that.

Working Closely with Farmers & Processors

Our relationships go beyond purchase orders. When possible, we build rapport directly with farmers, processors, and small co-operatives. This allows us to:

  • Understand growing cycles and seasonal factors
  • Plan ahead for supply challenges
  • Discuss ways to improve drying or processing
  • Offer feedback based on lab results and customer reviews
  • Grow together through shared success

It also opens the door to unique, small-batch, and hard-to-source herbs that aren’t available through larger distributors.

How This Benefits You

Everything we do in sourcing has one end goal: to give you confidence in what you’re using.

  • You know where your ingredients came from
  • You know they’ve been tested for safety
  • You know they were grown and processed with care
  • You know they weren’t rushed, diluted, or mass-produced at the expense of quality

That’s what product integrity looks like. And it’s what you deserve.
